Day 6: The Party Circuit

Day 8: Fill the Cup
October 6, 2010

There are so many companies doing so many great community initiatives. I like to think that more companies are giving back in some way to reflect their business than not.

Staples is one of the retail giants that is doing something for both education and the environment. This store specializes in all your office needs. You name it, they have it, plus a few others as well.

One of the main items I get at Staples is the ink for my printer. They come in all shapes and sizes and I have been using cartridges for years. Over the past year, I have noticed the addition of recycling bins right in their store. One of the items they have started recycling are ink cartridges. Did you know that in the US alone over 250 million cartridges are dumped into landfills every year and that number is growing.

Ouch. Between the toxic plastic casing, the ink seeping into the planet, and the oil and energy it takes to make them – if we all recycled or reused our cartridges it would be a happy day for Mother Nature.

Not only does Staples make it easy to recycle the cartridges, they also have an education fund that supports local schools in the area. I have quoted the Staples site on their GIVE this past year. “In 2009/2010 STAPLES donated $450,000.00 for Recycle For Education. A record 1,500 schools registered for the program and will receive a STAPLES gift card for $300.00.”

They have a simple goal this year I plan to be part of – collecting 2 million ink cartridges and toners for 2010 / 2011.

Give 7 / Day 7

The following is an easy GIVE I can slip into my day.

Quick stop by Staples to drop 7 used ink cartridges. I store them in my desk drawer until the box is full. This will also mean I will actually achieve 2 GIVES today.

1) Supporting local schools by dropping the cartridges at Staples which piggy backs with their already excisitng program.

2) I am helping to save the planet one ink cartridge at a time!

Time Commitment: 5 minutes (load cartridges into car and stop at Staples on route of all my other jobs of the day.)

Cost: $00.00
