I was getting tired out.
The groceries for dinner were just down the street. Turkey dollars for Christmas –
A free turkey – what a treat!
Day 85 / Give 85
I have the honour of making Christmas dinner every year. It’s a big job and I am happy to do it. We like to have a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
Our local IGA grocery store puts on a great promotion starting a number of weeks before the holidays. You can collect “turkey dollars” leading up to Christmas. The more you shop the more turkey dollars you receive to put towards your holiday turkey.
I have lived in Vancouver for 4 Christmas’ now and I have yet to pay for a turkey for my Christmas dinner ! I usually collect about 50 turkey dollars which allows for a huge organic bird. This year we are not hosting the entire family (18 guests) but instead just a few friends. (only 6 guests) This left me with many extra turkey dollars as I did not need to purchase a 20 pound bird this year. I had decide to buy a turkey for a family that would otherwise go without one this season. My mother and I are cooking the family their entire Christmas dinner and that GIVE will come on Christmas Day.
I had so many turkey dollars I even had 5 left over after buying two turkeys! The grocery clerk said I could keep them and use them before New Years but instead I decide to ‘pay them forward’. I ask the grocery clerk to hold onto them and to use them for the next person purchasing a turkey that didn’t have any or enough promotional dollars. I also asked the clerk to tell the person that receives my extra dollars that they were from one of Santa’s elves and a “Merry Christmas”.
He happily complied and thought the gesture was lovely. This GIVE didn’t cost me anything but what a great surprise for someone that I don’t even know.
