Day 230: An Apple a Day… Keeps the Homeless and Hungry Happy

Day 232: Do You Think Gen Y Can Save the Next Generation?
May 19, 2011

While reading through twitter over my morning coffee today I came across a tweet about a site called Be Straw Free. It instantly caught my eye as I have a drawer full of straws I keep reusing. I do my best not to throw the straws out as I know how much waste they create. Straws seems to last forever! I knew one day I would come up with an idea to reuse them. Once I read more from “Be Straw Free” started by a 4th grader by the name of Milo, I knew I had to do a “give” on how to reuse straws.

Day 231: Day 231

The inspiration was simple for this give. A young boy by the name of Milo that has started a campaign to reduce straw waste in the world.

It is estimated that Americans use on average 1.6 straws per day each.
That’s 500,000 million  a day in the US alone.

Nicolas’ Completed Straw Art

That’s a lot of straws and a lot of environmental waste we could reduce easily. My son and I came up with our own idea how we could use straws to create some fun on a rainy day, make a gift for his Grandmother and reuse some straws at the same time.  Watch the video and see what my son Nic and I did to give back to the planet today and “Be Straw Free.” I see a Picasso in the making!

Saving the Planet One Straw at a Time!

Time Commitment: 1/2 hour of art and a few seconds a day to wash our straws so we can reuse them instead of throwing them out

Cost: I save money by reusing straws
