While on my weekend morning walk I walked past the entrance to a construction site at the local primary school which is being used as a designated smoking area. I picked up rubbish but left the butts and took photos. I sent a text message and photos to the construction company contacts letting them know their workers and contractors are using the spot as a dumping ground for cigarettes butts and other rubbish and while I regularly pick up other peoples garbage on my morning walks I shouldn't have to. I requested that they that ask their people to be more environmentally responsible and to provide a landfill bin for the collection of the rubbish in future.
I received a quick reply, apology and a promise to address it in daily prestart meetings and was told they would send someone out there to clean it up. A little while later I received photos of the site cleaned up and felt very pleased with my actions and the action it achieved, I also realised that my nicely worded initial request generated positive rapport which I will aim to do in future.
